LUXURY PHU QUOC: WHAT TO BOOK ON VIETNAM'S LARGEST ISLAND?

Phu Quoc sits in the Gulf of Thailand, closer to Cambodia than to mainland Vietnam, with the country's best dry-season weather, its widest choice of resorts, and a thirty-day visa exemption that applies to almost every nationality arriving directly.

It is also the fastest-developing place in Vietnam and, in parts, an active construction site. Both things are true simultaneously, and which one you experience depends entirely on where you stay. This page covers what to book, what to avoid, and what is happening on the island right now.

THE HONEST POSITION ON DEVELOPMENT

Phu Quoc has been built at extraordinary speed over the past decade, and the pace has increased rather than slowed.

The island is preparing to host a major international summit in 2027, and the infrastructure programme attached to that is substantial: airport expansion, road works, new hotel construction and public projects running concurrently across the island through the intervening period.

For travellers this means two things. Some areas are noisy, dusty and visibly under construction. And the quiet parts of the island are quieter than ever by comparison, because everything is concentrated in a few zones.

We check current construction status before recommending a property rather than relying on last season's assessment, because on this island that assessment goes stale in months. Any luxury travel agency not doing that on Phu Quoc is guessing.

WHERE THE ISLAND IS QUIET?

The north and the north-west are the answer for most discerning travellers.

Above the main town the coast becomes rural quickly: rubber and pepper smallholdings, empty bays, small resorts set in trees, and a national park covering much of the island's northern half, protected as a biosphere reserve.

Ong Lang and the bays north of it hold a cluster of low-density properties with genuine character. Further north again, the coast is almost undeveloped.

The far south around Khem Beach holds several of the strongest resorts on the island on a genuinely beautiful stretch of sand, though it sits close to the entertainment developments and the cable car terminal.

The central west coast, along the long main beach, is the developed strip. It has sunsets, restaurants and convenience, and it is not where we place clients seeking privacy.

WHERE TO STAY?

Phu Quoc offers more luxury vacation packages than anywhere in Vietnam outside the central coast, which is its real advantage over Con Dao.

At the top sit a small number of properties of genuine international standing, including one in the south designed as an imagined French university campus, which is theatrical, extremely well executed and unlike anything else in the country. There are quieter villa resorts in the north-west, several excellent mid-scale properties in gardens near the beach, and a growing number of private villas available whole.

This choice is the practical argument for Phu Quoc in any luxury travel itinerary. If your preferred property is unavailable, there are genuine alternatives, which is not true of the smaller islands.

Format: designed resorts in the south, low-density villa properties in the north-west, or full villa buyouts.

Lead time: five to six months, and nine over Christmas, New Year and Tet, when the island is at its busiest.

THE BEACHES

Sao Beach in the south-east is the famous one: white sand, clear shallow water, and consistently crowded with day visitors by mid-morning. Go early or not at all.

Khem Beach, also in the south, is the better version and partly controlled by the resorts along it.

The long west coast beach is fine, developed and good for sunsets. Ong Lang is rockier, quieter and more attractive to many travellers for exactly that reason. The northern bays require effort to reach and reward it.

The island faces west, so sunsets are the daily event, and the sea is calm and swimmable through the entire dry season.

THE ARCHIPELAGO AND THE WATER

South of the island lies a scatter of small islets with the best water in the immediate area.

Snorkelling and diving are good rather than exceptional, and honestly not comparable to Con Dao. Visibility is best between roughly November and May. Private boat charter through the islets, away from the group boats, is the version worth doing and turns an average excursion into a genuine exclusive travel experience.

A cable car runs from the southern tip out to one of the islands and is among the longest over-sea cable cars anywhere. The view is genuinely remarkable. What waits at the far end is a theme park, so travellers should choose deliberately rather than arrive expecting an island escape.

PEPPER, FISH SAUCE AND PEARLS

The island's traditional economies are more interesting than the beach clubs.

Phu Quoc fish sauce is protected under European geographical indication rules, made in enormous wooden vats from anchovies caught in the surrounding waters and fermented for a year. Visiting a working producer is genuinely fascinating and the smell is exactly what you would expect.

Pepper is grown on smallholdings across the island, on poles rather than trellises, and the fresh green peppercorns are a revelation to anyone who has only met the dried version.

There are pearl farms, sim wine from a local myrtle berry, and a distinctive ridgeback dog islanders are proud of.

These are the things that make a Vietnam luxury vacation here feel like Vietnam rather than a generic tropical island, and they are almost entirely absent from standard itineraries.

THE NATIONAL PARK AND THE INTERIOR

More than half the island is protected forest, and very few visitors go into it.

There are trails, streams and waterfalls, and the birdlife is good. The park forms part of a larger biosphere reserve covering the coastal region of the mainland opposite.

Walking here with a naturalist is genuine luxury adventure travel by island standards, and works best as a morning before the heat. It is also the clearest illustration of what sustainable luxury Vietnam should mean on an island under this much development pressure: the forest is the reason the island still has fresh water.

THE FOOD

Island cooking here is seafood-led and better than the resort strip suggests.

Herring salad dressed with coconut and the island's own fish sauce is the signature. Sea urchin, grilled scallops and crab are everywhere. The night market in the main town is busy, touristy and genuinely good if you order what the Vietnamese tables are eating.

The best eating on the island is at simple places on the coast road north of town, where the fish arrived that morning and nobody has thought about presentation. The resort kitchens in the south are accomplished, and a small number of independent restaurants have opened in the last few years that would hold their own in Ho Chi Minh City.

Fresh green peppercorns from the island's own farms appear in the local crab dishes and are worth seeking out specifically. For a high end Vietnam vacation that includes serious eating elsewhere in the country, treat this as a relaxed seafood week rather than a culinary destination.

THE VILLA OPTION

Phu Quoc has more private villas available for whole-house rental than anywhere else in Vietnam, and for the right group this is the strongest thing the island offers.

Four to eight bedroom properties with private pools, staff, a chef and a driver on retainer are available along the west coast and in the north, at a level that would be entirely unattainable in Thailand or the Caribbean. For a family group or a set of friends travelling together, the arithmetic is compelling.

It changes the trip too. Meals happen when people are hungry, the group can split by day and reconvene at night, and nobody is negotiating a lobby. Most luxury vacation packages we build for groups of eight or more on this island are constructed around a house rather than a hotel.

The caution is that villa quality varies enormously and photography flatters. We inspect before we place anyone, which on this island matters more than the listing.

THE CABLE CAR AND THE SOUTHERN DEVELOPMENTS

Worth addressing directly, because travellers ask and the answer is not simple.

The southern tip of the island now holds a cluster of large entertainment developments: a themed waterfront district built to resemble a European canal town, a bridge designed as a sunset viewing platform, and the cable car terminal.

They are enormously popular with domestic and regional visitors, and the opposite of what most clients come to Vietnam for. Some travellers find them enjoyable in a straightforward way. Others find them dispiriting.

We describe them accurately rather than including or excluding them by default. The cable car ride itself is genuinely spectacular and can be done without engaging with what sits at either end, which is usually the recommendation.

HISTORY, BRIEFLY

There is a preserved prison site on the island from the war period, documenting conditions for prisoners held here in the 1960s and early 1970s.

It is confronting and it takes an hour. Compared with Con Dao the presentation is less sophisticated, but for travellers who will not reach Con Dao it provides important context.

The fishing village on the east coast is a working harbour on stilts over the water, best in the early morning when the boats come in.

WHEN TO COME?

Phu Quoc has the clearest seasonal split in Vietnam and it is the most important planning factor.

November to April is the dry season and it is excellent: sunny, calm, low humidity by Vietnamese standards, and reliably rainless. December to March is the peak and the island is full.

May to October is the southwest monsoon. July to September is the wettest, with heavy rain, rough sea and boat trips frequently cancelled. Some properties reduce operations. Rates fall significantly.

The shoulder months of May and October are frequently good value with acceptable weather, and we are happy to recommend them with the caveat clearly stated.

The one thing we will not do is sell a July beach holiday here as though it were February.

WHO IT SUITS?

Families above all. A luxury family vacation on Phu Quoc is straightforward in a way it is not elsewhere in Vietnam: direct flights, kids clubs, safe swimming, short transfers and genuine choice of properties.

Couples wanting comfort and reliability rather than remoteness, for whom luxury travel here is unusually easy. It is among the easier luxury honeymoon destinations to organise anywhere in Southeast Asia, though not the most private.

Travellers combining Vietnam with Cambodia or Thailand, given the flight connections.

Anyone needing a straightforward beach week to close a demanding luxury travel itinerary on the mainland.

WHO IT DOES NOT SUIT?

Travellers seeking remoteness. Con Dao does that far better.

Travellers who dislike development. Parts of this island will genuinely irritate you.

Serious divers, who should go south to Con Dao.

Anyone travelling between July and September primarily for the sea.

WHAT WE ARE ASKED MOST OFTEN?

Phu Quoc or Con Dao? Phu Quoc for choice, convenience and families. Con Dao for emptiness and nature. Most first-time visitors are better served here.

Is the visa exemption automatic? Arrivals direct to the island qualify for a thirty-day exemption regardless of nationality, which is unique in Vietnam. If you enter through the mainland first, normal rules apply, and this catches people out.

Is it too built up? In places, badly. In others, not at all. Placement is everything, and it is the whole job of a luxury travel agency on this island.

How long is the flight? Short from Ho Chi Minh City, and there are direct international services from several regional hubs.

Is Sao Beach worth it? Before eight, yes.

HOW MANY NIGHTS?

Four nights is the minimum for the journey to be worth it, and most luxury vacation packages allow five. Five to seven is the usual allocation, and it works well as the closing leg of a longer route.

Most luxury vacation packages we build place Phu Quoc after Ho Chi Minh City and the delta, so the trip ends with nothing scheduled and a direct flight home or onward.

Longer stays of ten nights or more suit a luxury family vacation taking a whole villa, which the island supports better than anywhere in Vietnam.

WELLNESS

The island has more spa capacity than anywhere in Vietnam and comparatively few serious programmes, and the distinction matters.

Almost every resort has a substantial spa, and treatment quality at the better properties is high. A handful of northern properties operate on a genuinely programme-led basis, with consultation before arrival and a structured schedule across a set number of nights.

For travellers wanting a formal luxury wellness retreat, we would generally look first at the mainland coast or the highlands, where the specialist properties are. For travellers wanting excellent daily treatments alongside a beach week, this island is the strongest option in the country simply on breadth of choice.

GOLF AND ACTIVITY

There are courses on the island and more planned, though this is not yet a golf destination in the way the central coast is.

What the island does well is water activity: sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and diving in season. Cycling the northern coast road early in the morning is genuinely pleasant, with almost no traffic once you are past the town.

For families, the range of organised activity is the widest in Vietnam, which is the main reason a luxury family vacation here is easier to construct than anywhere else in the country.

ARRIVING AND MOVING AROUND

The airport handles domestic services from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City with high frequency, plus direct international flights from several regional hubs, and expansion work is under way.

That frequency is the island's structural advantage over Con Dao. A cancelled flight has alternatives, which means we do not need to build the same protective buffers into the itinerary.

The island is large and the roads are good but distances are real: north to south takes over an hour. Private car with driver throughout is the sensible arrangement, and guests staying in the far north should understand that the airport transfer is not ten minutes.

HOW WE BUILD PHU QUOC?

Which properties currently have construction within earshot, which changes by the season. Which stretch of which beach is genuinely quiet at four in the afternoon. Which boat operator goes to the islets the group tours skip. Which pepper farm and which fish sauce producer will genuinely receive guests rather than run a shop, and where a bespoke travel experience is still possible on an island this busy.

If you want a reliable beach week with genuine choice and easy logistics, this is the best luxury travel answer in Vietnam. A private Vietnam experience is harder to construct here than on the smaller islands, and it is entirely possible once you leave the developed strip.

For a bespoke Vietnam journey ending at the coast, this island remains the most practical closing chapter in the country, provided the dates and the placement are right.

CELEBRATIONS AND GROUPS

The island handles large groups better than anywhere else in Vietnam, which is a function of inventory rather than character.

Full villa buyouts, resort buyouts at the smaller properties, private beach dinners and boat charters for a group are all straightforward here with reasonable notice. Wedding parties are common and the resorts are practised at them.

For milestone birthdays and family gatherings of a dozen or more, an exclusive Vietnam travel arrangement on this island is considerably easier to deliver than on Con Dao or the mainland coast, and costs a fraction of the equivalent in Thailand.

The caveat is privacy. A large group here will be one of several, which is not the case on the smaller islands, so clients wanting genuine seclusion for a celebration should look south.

SUSTAINABILITY, AND THE PRESSURE

This is the place in Vietnam where the tension between development and preservation is most visible, and it deserves an honest treatment rather than a paragraph of reassurance.

Fresh water comes from the forested interior, which is why the national park matters practically rather than decoratively. Waste management has struggled to keep pace with visitor numbers. Coastal construction has affected some reef areas. The pace of building is faster than the infrastructure supporting it.

The useful questions are specific: whether a property processes its own waste, whether it draws staff from the island, whether boat operators use fixed moorings, and whether the excursion you are sold goes to a site already under pressure. Sustainable luxury travel here means choosing operators who can answer those without hesitating, and there are fewer of them than the marketing suggests.
