LUXURY WORKATIONS IN VIETNAM: WHAT TO BOOK FOR AN EXTENDED STAY?

The office moved and it may as well move somewhere worth being. Vietnam has become one of the most practical bases in the world for people who work while travelling, and almost none of the reasons are the ones usually cited.

This page covers what an extended stay actually requires, where to base yourself, the visa position stated plainly, and the two technical problems that catch people out. It is a different product from luxury travel by the fortnight and needs planning as one.

WHY VIETNAM WORKS?

Four things, in order of how much they matter.

The time zone is the strongest argument and the least discussed. Connectivity is good and occasionally interrupted in a specific way worth understanding. The cost base means a monthly budget buys a residence with staff rather than a room. And the working day here is bracketed by something genuinely worth stopping for, which is the entire point of the exercise.

What Vietnam does not have is a formal digital nomad visa, which several regional competitors now offer. That matters and it is covered below.

THE TIME ZONE, WHICH IS THE REAL ARGUMENT

Vietnam sits seven hours ahead of Greenwich, which produces an unusually workable day for two of the three major markets.

For anyone working with Europe, the Vietnamese afternoon is the European morning. You have the whole morning to yourself before anything begins, which is the single most valuable structural feature of being here and the one people notice within a week.

For anyone working with the American east coast, the Vietnamese evening is the American morning. That is harder and it is manageable with a defined block rather than an open calendar.

For anyone working across Asia, the day simply aligns.

The combination that does not work is Europe and the American west coast in the same role. Nothing about Vietnam fixes that and we say so rather than pretend.

CONNECTIVITY, AND THE CABLE PROBLEM

Domestic internet in Vietnamese cities is fast, cheap and reliable, and mobile data coverage is excellent almost everywhere including on the islands and in much of the mountains.

The complication is international bandwidth. Vietnam's connections to the wider internet run through a small number of submarine cables, and faults on those cables have repeatedly caused periods of degraded international speeds while domestic service remains fine. It is not a constant problem and it is a recurring one.

The practical answer is redundancy rather than avoidance: a property with more than one provider, a local mobile data plan as backup, and an honest conversation about what your work actually requires. Video calls to Europe during a cable fault are unpleasant. Email and document work are unaffected.

Any luxury travel agency arranging a month-long stay without asking what bandwidth your work requires has not thought about it.

THE VISA POSITION, HONESTLY

This needs a straight answer because the marketing elsewhere is evasive.

Vietnam does not currently offer a dedicated digital nomad visa. Several neighbouring countries do, and travellers comparing options should know that.

What exists is an electronic visa valid for up to ninety days with multiple entry, available to a wide range of nationalities, which is the route most extended-stay visitors use. Longer arrangements exist through business sponsorship and temporary residence, and they involve a company, paperwork and time.

Working remotely for a foreign employer while on a tourist or e-visa occupies a grey area that is widely practised and not formally provided for. We are not lawyers and we will not pretend otherwise. Anyone planning a stay of several months, or anyone whose employer requires certainty about their status, should take proper immigration advice before committing rather than relying on what a travel company tells them.

WHERE TO BASE?

Five options, each suiting a different working pattern.

The central coast around Da Nang is the default and deserves to be. An international airport, a long beach, a serious golf cluster, a UNESCO town twenty minutes away, good hospitals and the strongest concentration of long-stay villas in the country. It is where most extended stays should happen and where most of our luxury vacation packages of this kind are based.

The heritage town nearby is slower and prettier and works for a month rather than three, because the same lanes become familiar quickly.

Ho Chi Minh City suits anyone whose work involves meetings, given the business infrastructure, the dining and the international connections, and it is the easiest base for a high end Vietnam vacation that must accommodate a working calendar. It is loud and it is not restful.

Hanoi suits travellers who want four seasons and cultural depth, at the cost of a genuine cold, damp winter that catches people out.

The southern island suits families and anyone wanting a beach base with real inventory, including several of the best luxury resorts in the country, and the highland town suits anyone who wants cool air and quiet.

THE WORKSPACE PROBLEM NOBODY MENTIONS

This is the most common complaint after a long stay and it is entirely avoidable.

Resorts and villas in Vietnam are designed for holidays, not for work. The desk, if there is one, is usually a decorative writing table at the wrong height. The chair is frequently rattan with no back support. The lighting is atmospheric rather than functional. After three days this is charming and after three weeks it is a physiotherapy appointment.

We specify workspace explicitly when we arrange extended stays: a proper desk at the right height, an ergonomic chair brought in if the property does not have one, adequate task lighting, and a monitor where the work requires it. These are sourced locally and inexpensively, and almost nobody thinks to ask.

The second issue is acoustics. Air conditioning units, open-plan villas and hard surfaces make for poor call audio, and rooms that look beautiful frequently sound terrible. We check this.

WHAT AN EXTENDED STAY ACTUALLY NEEDS?

Different infrastructure from a holiday, and this is where luxury vacation packages designed for two weeks fail at two months.

A private residence rather than a suite, because separation between where you work and where you sleep is not optional over months. This is where luxury travel for two weeks and luxury travel for two months genuinely diverge. Kitchen access, because eating out for sixty consecutive days stops being a pleasure. A driver on retainer rather than booked ad hoc. Laundry that is included rather than itemised. A local mobile number and payment method.

And an itinerary that activates when the laptop closes, which is the element people most often forget to arrange and most regret. A month here with nothing planned becomes a month of working in a nicer room.

FAMILIES ON EXTENDED STAYS

Increasingly common and it changes the requirements substantially.

International schools in the major cities generally do not take short-term enrolments, so families on stays of a term or less typically continue online schooling with tutoring support, which is straightforward to arrange locally and inexpensive.

What matters more is the shape of the week. A luxury family vacation of two weeks can be relentless; two months cannot be. The families who do this well establish a routine, keep weekdays ordinary, and treat weekends as the travel. Villa accommodation with a pool and space to be apart is close to essential.

The central coast is the strongest base for a luxury family vacation of this length by a wide margin, and the island is second.

HEALTHCARE AND PRACTICALITIES

There are international-standard hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Da Nang with English-speaking staff, and the standard of care for routine matters is good.

Comprehensive travel or expatriate medical insurance is essential for any luxury travel stay of a month or more, and policies vary enormously in what they cover for long stays and for evacuation. This is worth reading properly rather than assuming.

Beyond that: a local SIM on arrival, a payment app, and a driver who knows where the good pharmacy is. We set all of it up before arrival rather than leaving clients to work it out in the first week.

THE FOOD PROBLEM, AND WHY IT MATTERS AT LENGTH

Nobody plans for this and everybody encounters it.

Vietnamese food is among the best in the world to eat for two weeks. At two months, eating out for every meal becomes tiring regardless of quality, and travellers start craving the ordinary food of home at precisely the point when they are furthest from it.

For a stay of a month or more we build this in from the start rather than waiting for it to become a problem, and it is the single adjustment that most improves how an extended luxury travel stay feels by week six.

Two weeks of holiday inactivity is fine. Two months is not, and the properties that suit short stays frequently have gyms designed for people who will not use them.

What works here is outdoors and early. Swimming is available almost everywhere and the sea is warm most of the year. Cycling on the coastal roads before seven is genuinely pleasant. Running is best done at dawn given the heat and the traffic. There are good yoga and pilates studios in the major cities and on the central coast.

Golf deserves a mention, since the central coast holds the strongest cluster in the country and membership-style arrangements for extended stays are negotiable in a way that surprises people. It is a genuine bespoke travel experience over a season rather than a round.

We specify gym quality and pool length when arranging long stays, because a plunge pool and a treadmill in a cupboard do not sustain three months. It is exactly the kind of detail that separates luxury vacation packages built for a fortnight from those built for a season.

THE SOCIAL QUESTION

The thing extended-stay travellers most often underestimate is isolation.

A holiday is short enough that nobody notices. Three months in a villa on a quiet stretch of coast, working alone, is a different experience, and it is why some workations end early.

Vietnam handles this better than most places. There are established international communities on the central coast, in the two major cities and on the southern island, which makes exclusive Vietnam travel of this length considerably less isolating than the equivalent elsewhere. Coworking spaces exist and function as much for company as for desks. Language classes, cooking courses and sports clubs all provide structure.

We introduce clients to whatever community fits, because it is the least tangible and most important part of a long stay working out. A private Vietnam experience over three months should not mean three months of privacy.

THE WEEKEND, WHICH IS THE POINT?

Nobody comes here to work in a nicer room. The reason to base in Vietnam is what sits within reach on a Friday afternoon.

From the central coast: an imperial city two hours north, the cave systems four hours away, a mountain pass, offshore islands, and a golf cluster.

From the capital: a limestone bay two and a half hours away, the inland karst ninety minutes south, and the mountain valleys.

From the southern city: the delta, the coast, and a short flight to two very different islands.

This is where a private Vietnam experience becomes genuinely valuable on a long stay, because the second and third weekends need better ideas than the first. WHEN TO COME, BY BASE?

The central coast is dry February to August and floods September to December, which is the single most important constraint for the most popular base. A long stay spanning October is a mistake.

The capital is best October to April, with a cold damp winter in January and February.

The southern city and the delta are dry December to April and wet with afternoon rain the rest of the year, which is workable year-round.

The southern island is dry November to April and genuinely wet July to September.

The highland town is cool and dry November to March.

HOW LONG?

Two to four weeks is a working holiday and can be based anywhere.

Two to three months is the sweet spot for a genuine workation, long enough to establish a routine and short enough to sit within the ninety-day electronic visa. Most luxury vacation packages we build in this category run to that length.

Six months or more requires a different visa arrangement and proper advice, and it stops being a travel question.

WHAT CAN GO WRONG?

Basing on the central coast through the flood season, which is the commonest error.

Assuming international bandwidth will be uninterrupted.

Arriving without workspace specified and losing three weeks to a bad chair.

Underestimating the heat in May and June, when working through the middle of the day is genuinely unpleasant without proper cooling.

Failing to plan the weekends, which is what turns a workation into a long stay in an unfamiliar place.

COMBINING WORK WITH A WELLNESS ROUTINE

One of the better arguments for basing here is that recovery is affordable enough to become routine rather than occasional.
