The range within a short distance is unusual. A day can hold a sunrise ride through mountain passes, an afternoon on a private junk, and a night in a rooftop scene that now competes with Bangkok and Singapore on quality rather than price.

And the country absorbs a group without inconvenience. Restaurants seat twelve at short notice. Boats take a party whole. Guides are plentiful and inexpensive enough that splitting the day is trivial.

THE VILLA BUYOUT, WHICH CHANGES EVERYTHING

This is the single most important decision a group makes and most make it too late.

Taking a whole house rather than scattered hotel rooms alters the texture of the trip completely. Meals happen when people are hungry rather than when a restaurant is booked. The group can split by day and reconvene at night without anybody negotiating a lobby. Somebody can go to bed at nine while somebody else stays up until three, and neither becomes an event anybody has to discuss.

The northern limestone bays are the second thing worth taking whole.

For six to eight people the arithmetic frequently beats the same number of cabins on a shared vessel, which surprises groups who assumed a charter was out of reach. It is the clearest example in Vietnam of an exclusive travel experience costing less than expected.

Two nights is the minimum worth doing and one night is a transaction, which is why no luxury travel agency should propose it for a group that has flown this far.

THE MONEY CONVERSATION NOBODY HAS

This is the practical advice most likely to save a friendship, and no luxury travel agency ever raises it.

Groups arrive with unequal budgets and nobody says so. One person is stretching, another is not thinking about it, and the itinerary gets built to the loudest voice. By day four somebody is quietly declining excursions and the group has a problem it cannot discuss.

The fix is to agree the tier before anything is booked, in writing, with one person nominated to deal with us. Decide what is shared and what is individual. Decide whether the boat day is compulsory.

The trip that succeeds does not move as a single unit.

The shape that works is a shared morning, a split afternoon and a common table at night. Two or three options each day at different intensities, with a vehicle and guide for each, which is affordable here in a way it is not elsewhere.

Practically that means the caving party and the spa party both get their day, and neither has to justify it. Groups that insist on doing everything together are the ones where somebody is bored on day three.

GOLF

Central Vietnam holds the strongest golf cluster in the country and one of the better ones in Asia, with several courses by well-known designers within an hour of each other.

Caddies are included as standard, courses are rarely congested midweek, and the coastal layouts are genuinely good rather than merely scenic. Green conditions hold through the long dry season.

It works particularly well for a mixed group because the resorts sit close together, so the golfers and the non-golfers are not separated by an hour of driving. THE NIGHTS

Ho Chi Minh City is comfortably the strongest nightlife city in Vietnam and the rooftop scene has moved from novelty to genuine quality.

The famous hotel terraces are pleasant, expensive and full of people taking the same photograph. The interesting ones are smaller bars on the upper floors of older buildings, several unmarked at street level, reached by service lifts that inspire no confidence whatsoever. Finding them is a genuine exclusive travel experience rather than a marketed one.

Beyond the city, the coast has beach clubs and several of the best luxury resorts in the country, the heritage town has a river and lanterns, and the northern capital has a quieter bar culture worth an evening.

Private buyouts of a rooftop or a restaurant for a group are straightforward and cost far less than the phrase suggests.

FOOD, AND THE COMPETITIVE ELEMENT

Groups eat better here than almost anywhere, and the cooking classes work better than they should because they can be made competitive.

A market run at six followed by a household kitchen, with the group divided into competing teams, produces more enjoyment than any other scheduled activity we arrange anywhere. It also produces the photographs people actually keep.

Beyond that: eleven Michelin-starred restaurants across the country as of the 2026 guide, private chef's tables, and street food that is frequently better than the restaurant tier above it. A private chef in a villa is among the better value elements of any bespoke travel experience built for a group.

THE ADVENTURE OPTIONS

For groups who want something to talk about afterwards, four things stand out.

Permit-controlled caving in the centre, ranging from a multi-day expedition to shorter river-cave itineraries, which is genuine luxury adventure travel and capacity-limited.

Riding pillion behind experienced local riders through the northern mountain passes, which is genuine luxury adventure travel and considerably safer than self-riding.

Diving on the remote southern islands, where the reef is the healthiest in Vietnam and a private boat day there beats any shared excursion the region offers.

Kayaking through tunnels and lagoons in the northern bays that nothing larger can enter.

GROUP SIZE, AND WHAT CHANGES

Four to six is the easiest. Everything is available, a villa is comfortable, and a charter is straightforward.

Eight to twelve is the sweet spot for a buyout and where luxury travel economics work hardest. Restaurants need notice, transfers need two vehicles, and the day should be designed with options.

Fourteen to twenty needs a different approach: a resort buyout at a smaller property, or two adjacent villas, and a proper daily structure rather than improvisation.

Beyond twenty it becomes an event rather than a holiday, and an ultra luxury Vietnam gathering at that scale needs the planning that implies rather than an extended booking.

STAG AND HEN PARTIES, HONESTLY

Vietnam does the civilised version of this well and the other version badly.

A villa, a chef, a boat day, golf, a spa afternoon and a serious dinner is a strong few days and entirely achievable. The country is safe, the food is excellent and the value is remarkable.

What Vietnam does not have is a developed party-destination infrastructure, and the resorts that suit our clients enforce noise curfews. Groups looking for that should go elsewhere and we will say so rather than take the booking and disappoint everybody.

THE ITINERARIES THAT WORK FOR GROUPS

Four shapes, and most groups fit one.

The villa week takes a single house on the central coast or the southern island and runs everything from it: golf, boat days, the heritage town, a cooking session, and several days doing nothing. It is the simplest to organise and consistently the best rated.

The two-centre ten days pairs a city with a villa, giving the group nightlife at the front and recovery at the back. This is the shape most requested for milestone birthdays.

The active fortnight moves: the northern mountains by pillion, the caves in the centre, then a coast. It suits groups in their thirties and forties with something to prove and it needs everybody to genuinely want it.

The golf trip bases on the central coast, plays four or five courses, and builds the non-golf days around the heritage town and the beach. It is the easiest group itinerary to sell to a mixed party because the non-players are well served.

Transfers cost a group more than they cost a couple, and this is the most underestimated element in group planning.

Twelve people do not move in twelve minutes. Loading, luggage, the person who forgot something, and two vehicles that must arrive together turn a thirty-minute transfer into an hour. Three internal moves in ten days is the practical ceiling for a group of that size.

Domestic flights are frequent, inexpensive and the right answer for long jumps, though group check-in needs building into the timings. Private vehicles with drivers are right for anything under three hours.

The twelve-guest railway carriage on the central coast takes a group of that size whole, which is unusual and worth knowing. For six to twelve people it turns a transfer into the best half-day of the week.

THE ONE THING WORTH SPENDING ON

If a group has one place to concentrate the budget, it is the private chef rather than the property.

A chef in a villa transforms a group holiday more than an extra bedroom or a better view. Breakfast whenever people surface, lunch by the pool, and a serious dinner without anybody driving anywhere or negotiating a table for twelve. The cost, spread across a group, is remarkably small.

It also solves the dietary problem, which with twelve people is guaranteed to exist. Four requirements handled quietly by somebody who was briefed in advance beats a restaurant conversation every evening.

WHAT GOES WRONG?

One person's pace setting the whole trip, which the split-day structure solves.

Undiscussed budgets, covered above and worth repeating.

Assuming a resort will accommodate a large group at short notice, which in high season it will not.

Underestimating transfer times, particularly in the cities at six in the evening.

Alcohol and early starts, which do not combine and which ruin more mornings on the water than weather does.

NOISE, CURFEWS AND PRACTICALITIES

Worth knowing before the deposit rather than after.

Resorts enforce amplified music curfews and they are earlier than most groups expect. Acoustic music beyond that hour is usually possible and often better.

Villas in residential areas have neighbours, and the good operators are strict about it. A private estate with no immediate neighbours is a different proposition and worth specifying if the group intends to be loud.

Drone use requires authorisation that is location-specific, and flying without it risks confiscation.

WHEN TO COME?

Choose the month first. The central coast, where most villa inventory sits, is dry February to August and floods September to December, which is the single most important constraint for a group trip.

The southern island is dry November to April. The northern bays are best October to December and March to May.

HOW LONG?

Seven nights is enough for a focused trip in one or two places.

OLDER GROUPS, AND WHAT CHANGES?

A substantial number of the groups we plan for are friends in their sixties travelling together annually, and the requirements differ from the assumption.

The pace changes rather than the ambition. Later starts, longer lunches, one activity a day rather than three. Heat is the constraint more than distance, particularly inland from April to August.

Villas matter more, not less, because the alternative is a group spread across a hotel with nowhere to sit together. Ground-floor bedrooms and step-free access are worth specifying rather than hoping for, and boat access to the bay resorts requires a step down into a tender that is manageable with help.

Vietnam suits these groups particularly well because the service instinct toward older guests is genuine rather than trained, and because a driver on retainer costs little enough that nobody walks further than they want to.

CORPORATE AND INCENTIVE GROUPS

Adjacent to this category and worth a brief note, because the requirements overlap and the constraints do not.

Vietnam handles incentive travel well: strong villa and resort inventory, excellent food, cost efficiency that makes a longer or better trip possible, and enough variety to fill several days without repetition.

What differs is the need for contingency and formality. Corporate groups need a documented plan, a named contact, alternates for every outdoor element, and clarity about what happens if a flight is delayed.

We handle these differently from a group of friends and we say so, because treating a company trip like a holiday for twelve is how incentive programmes go wrong. A luxury travel agency should be explicit about which product a client is buying.

THE PHOTOGRAPHY AND THE RECORD

A small point that groups consistently wish they had thought about.

Nobody in a group of twelve ends up with good photographs of the group, because everybody is in them. A photographer for one afternoon, at the villa or on the boat, costs very little here and produces the thing people actually keep from a milestone trip.

It works best arranged in advance and mentioned to nobody, so the images show a group enjoying themselves rather than a group posing for a camera they knew was coming.
